A Philippi-based foundation is urging men from all over the Kaap and Mzansi to sign their petition to fast-track gender-based violence cases and provide support to victims.
Last Thursday, the Cevsi Foundation hosted an event at the offices next to Philippi court to launch the petition which they hope will get 1000 signatures by November 26.
Luvuyo Zahela, programme manager for Cevsi Foundation, said: “Our plan is to march on November 26 and hand over copies of the petition to the department of justice, the court and the three police stations that service the Philippi area.
“The petition will call for GBV cases to be treated as a priority and that officials conduct thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice, our number one goal is to increase the number of successful convictions.
“Many times people accused of GBV cases are out on the streets too quickly so the victims don’t feel safe while there is also a lack of proper psychological care and counselling for victims.”
At the event, Luvuyo said 77 men signed the petition while the document was also placed online.
“The plan is to spread it through our partners not only in Philippi but also to other areas in Cape Town and South Africa so that we can go over our goal of 1 000 signatures.
“We want to show that the men in their community will not stand for gender-based violence and that we are here to support the victims.”
