Cape Town - A group of residents from the Marikana informal settlement in Cape Town marched to the High Court on Wednesday hoping for judgement relating to their living situation.
“This is our first appearance in the High Court today and we are hoping they will make a judgement on the matter,” said march convenor Sandile Shologu.
The residents had already appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court in 2014, following what marchers said was an application for eviction from fellow Marikana residents.
“They said we occupied their land illegally and they want us to move out,” said Shologu. “They don’t want our shelters there.”
However, Shologu and his fellow marchers said that if they were to move, an appropriate alternative was needed.
Shologu added that the march had no political affiliations and that they were just residents with shared interests in finding a home.
