Cape Town cyclist in ICU after attack
Cape Town - A 57-year-old man is in an intensive care unit in hospital after he was attacked on Sunday morning while cycling near Fisantekraal.
Police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said that a case of robbery had been opened for investigation, but no one had been arrested at this stage.
A family member who didn’t want to be named said the cyclist, a “Mr Swart” of Durbanville, was injured on Sunday when attackers thrust a stick through the spokes of his front bicycle wheel.
“He fell afterwards and was then attacked with bricks, which broke his nose. They took his cellphone and he was lucky because the community stopped the attack.
“It’s quite sad what happened to him because he is a teacher in this very same community (in which he was attacked),” said the relative. “Safety is becoming a major concern for us, people are not safe anymore, we are calling for the community to fight this.”
He said a similar incident occurred on Sunday in which another cyclist was attacked by thieves.
