Cape Town - The man believed to have confessed to killing Chad Baron has ditched his bail application.

Meanwhile, friends and family of the 26-year-old Strandfontein man claim he did not know his alleged killers at all.

Ricardo Jackson, 29, Remario Jenere, 24, and Warren Challen, 22, made a brief appearance at the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where they heard that their charge of attempted murder has been changed to that of murder.

They also face additional charges of burglary, car theft and kidnapping.

Baron was hijacked on June 8 while on his way home from a farewell party.

He was beaten and stabbed multiple times and found barely alive in an abandoned building in Camp Road, Strandfontein.

He died two weeks ago while being treated at Groote Schuur Hospital.

On Thursday, seconds after Jackson stepped into the dock wearing a neat white shirt, his lawyer, N Hernadien, said he would no longer be applying for bail.

The court heard previously that Jackson, from Tafelsig, had made a statement to police about his role in Baron’s murder, and that the victim’s car papers had allegedly been found in his possession.

Hernadien also indicated that she would no longer be representing Jenere, who appointed a new lawyer, and that Challen would be represented by Advocate Gilbert Jose in future.

State prosecutor Darren Johnson told the court the men would now face a charge of murder.

“The charge is no longer attempted murder, the complainant is now deceased.”

The case was postponed to August 13 for the bail application of Jenere and Challen, who are both from Strandfontein.

Inside court, Baron’s distraught aunt Marina Marco, began shouting at the men.

“Why did you kill him, you killed my cousin,” she screamed.

Marco said it angered her to see the men well and alive while Baron’s family had to come to terms with losing him.

“When I saw them, they didn’t show remorse, even now that Chad is gone,” she said.

Razaan Holland, 28, Baron’s ex-girlfriend and close friend, says he never knew his alleged killers.

“If Chad knew them, I would have known them,” she said.

“I have never seen their faces and they were never at his home.”
