Cape Town – Police are probing threats made against a New Apostolic church in Bellville.
Parishioners learnt that bomb threats had been made against their church after information was posted on an international terror alert website last month.
Several members of the congregation, who last month e-mailed the Weekend Argus about the bomb threats, said they were living in fear as they had received threatening e-mails shortly after contacting the newspaper.
Kennard Kotze, the church’s spokesperson, said those who made the bomb threats had accused the church of links to a group they had termed the “Nongoloza cult”.
They apparently thought a church member was the cult's leader.
“The church is being targeted because we are apparently harbouring this man,” Kotze said. He said the man, whose name is known to Weekend Argus, was definitely not leading a cult.
Kotze said the church had no idea who was behind the threats, which were being investigated by the police.
“We are obviously very concerned about the well-being of our members and what is happening disrupts the normal way in which we go about worshipping God,” Kotze said.
"We have left the investigations to the SAPS and they are in constant contact with us."
