Cosatu on Thursday welcomed the ruling that Shrien Dewani, accused of murdering his wife on their honeymoon, can be extradited from Britain to South Africa to stand trial.

“Cosatu totally shares the magistrate's complete confidence in the South African justice system and will condemn any move by Dewani's legal team to appeal against the decision,” union federation spokesman Patrick Craven said in a statement.

“Their entire case is based on a groundless attempt to blacken the reputation of our judicial system and prison service.”

On Wednesday Judge Howard Riddle told the Belmarsh Magistrates' Court in south-east London there was a “strong public interest” in Dewani being extradited.

Dewani, 31, denies any involvement in the death of Anni Dewani. She was shot dead in a taxi in Cape Town in November 2010, in an apparent hijacking.

Accused of ordering the attack, Dewani has fought extradition proceedings, saying he was suffering from severe post-traumatic stress.

The application to extradite Dewani would now be passed to Home Secretary Theresa May for a final decision. – Sapa
