CAPE TOWN- 67 Coronavirus mobile sampling and testing units have been launched by Health minister Zweli Mkhize in Gauteng on Wednesday.

"Hopefully by next week these mobile units will move the capacity to 30 000 tests in 24 hours. At the moment, there are 10 labs which can each do 5 000 tests per day," said Mkhize at a media briefing at the National Health Laboratory Service Head Office in Sandringham.

These testing units contain specialized equipment and are set to be deployed nationwide to all districts and metropolitan municipalities.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Monday that the units form part of a massive testing project where around 10,000 field workers will be visiting homes in villages, towns and cities to screen residents for Covid-19 symptoms
