CAPE TOWN- As the matrics of 2020 prepare for their final examinations to take place in just over two months, many schools are preparing operational plans and procedures to ensure the learners are able to write under safe conditions.

Curro Durbanville has released its Standard Operating Procedures(SOPs) which will be in place for the exam period, including on-campus screening, regular sanitising, wearing of masks and social distancing.

Matric learners from the independent school in Sonstraal Heights began their preliminary exams last week, and Executive Head, Dirk van Zyl, said that the safety of the learners and staff remains a priority.

Van Zyl said Curro continues to comply with requirements of the Disaster Management Act and the guidelines of the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).

“During the lockdown period when schools were instructed to close, Curro Durbanville was fortunately able to continue with its remote and virtual learning strategy so that learners could remain on track with their academic goals,” he said.

“In the beginning, it took some time for our learners and teachers to adjust to this ‘new normal’, and we were grateful that they were able to adapt so quickly.”

To ensure the health and safety of all on site, Curro outlined Operational Plans and SOPs, including requirements to prepare a facility, infection control, providing emotional support to learners, and data claim procedures.

“Curro Durbanville is exceptionally proud of its learners and teachers, and especially the matrics, who all worked tirelessly throughout this period, rendering the entire school ready for exams. One’s matric year is a daunting one to begin with, and adding lockdown-related nerves and uncertainty ‘to the mix’ leaves a less than desirable situation. But, Curro Durbanville’s Class of 2020 have shown immense resilience, and we wish them all the best for their exams!” said Van Zyl.
