DURBAN - The Chinese government together with the Bank of China have donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers in Johannesburg.

The donation was made by the Chinese Consulate General, Tang Zhongdong to Gauteng MEC for Health Dr Bandile Masuku on Tuesday.

Around 30,000 units of protective equipment were donated including face masks and gloves.

Zhongdong expressed the Chinese government's gratitude towards South Africa for their help in dealing with the Covid-19 outbreak.

“While we were fighting the coronavirus in China, we got the support of South Africa and we say thanks very much. At the moment, South Africa is fighting the spread of the virus and we firmly support it. A friend in need is a friend indeed,” added Zhongdong.

"We are quite grateful and appreciative of this gesture from the People's Republic of China. It is something that we have indicated to them that we expect more. We hoping that this equipment will add on what we are actually busy with in terms of procuring and creating enough stock for our health care workers," said Masuku.
