CAPE TOWN- What would have been the 95th edition of the Comrades Marathon has now been cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak in South Africa.

The announcement was made earlier today by the Athletics South Africa (ASA) Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Board and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA).

CMA Chairperson Cheryl Winn said “we had hoped to postpone The Ultimate Human Race to a date not later than end of September (owing to climatic conditions), but alas with the Covid-19 pandemic showing no signs of abating and anticipated to peak in the coming months, there is no telling what is yet to come”.

Where does this news leave the roughly 2,500 foreign and 25,000 South African entrants?

For South African entrants

Runners will not be refunded their entrance fee of R600 but will instead receive their #Comrades2020 Mrp Sport runners T-shirt and goodie bag, as well as a Comrades badge and flash. These items will be made available once lockdown restrictions allow for transport.

For foreign entrants

Foreign athletes from the continent will not be refunded their entrance fee of R1500 and other foreign athletes will not receive their refund of R3800. Due to logistical reasons, they will also not receive their Comrades goodie bags. Foreign runners will have the option of availing their 2020 entry for substitution in 2021 only.
