CAPE TOWN- While much of the world is still in some form of lockdown, an American food and hospitality company has sought to win back the trust of restaurant diners by creating a new position called a Covid-19 czar.

Restaurant Associates, based in New York have recently elevated its senior director for strategic projects, Anthony Capozzoli, to the Covid-19 safety czar.

The newly appointed czar will focus on creating systems and procedures to allow for the safe return of restaurant diners, and he is tasked with marketing this comprehensive reopening strategy to a somewhat skittish public.

The Oxford Dictionary definition of a czar — which applies to this context — is one having great power or authority.

, Capozzoli said he will be overseeing and instituting everything from new cleaning procedures in the restaurants to exploring contactless ordering technologies.

“I don’t claim to be an expert on all things Covid-19 but it’s my commitment to find the answers,” Capozzoli told Adweek.

Some restaurants in countries where restrictions have been eased now have the difficulty of convincing the public to feel comfortable to walk into their establishment and enjoy a meal. The creation of a decided Covid czar (or similar title) might become a practice that more brands choose to adopt, to regain diners trust.
