CAPE TOWN- This week will be critical in determining whether the National lockdown will continue or whether there will be a modified lockdown implemented according to chairman of South Africa’s Covid-19 Ministerial Advisory Committee Professor Salim Abdool Karim.
Community transmission levels are used as indicators to guide the Ministerial Advisory Committee on how to manage the lockdown going forward.
"By the 18th of April, we will know if our interpretation of community transmission is correct. If the average number of daily cases is above 90, then we need to continue the lockdown because the average number of cases is going up," he said.
The elderly may face an extended lockdown
In South Africa, many of the Covid-19 victims have been above the age of 60, Professor Karim says that the elderly need to be protected.
"We are concerned for people who above 70, especially those who have underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and lung disease," he said.
