The temporary hospital which was set up at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) started admitting its first Covid-19 related patients, one month after the transformation began.
Healthcare facilities at the Hospital of Hope include apparatus to administer oxygen, a digital x-ray machine, physiotherapy and an on-site pharmacy.
“The temporary hospital is the biggest Covid-19 field hospital in Africa, and was completed in just four weeks,” said Western Cape Premier Alan Winde.
“As we move towards the peak of Covid-19 infections in the province at the end of June or beginning of July, many people in the Western Cape will become ill.
“This facility will create a space for people to recover, while at the same time allowing others to receive care in our other acute hospital facilities,” he said.
The Convention Centre’s four halls and service yards were turned into a four ward facility which will be staffed by over 900 people.
Two other temporary hospitals are currently under construction, in the Cape Winelands and Brackengate along the R300.
