DURBAN – After the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions were lifted in Germany, restaurants and cafés were given the go-ahead to reopen their doors to the public on Saturday, May 8.
Café and Konditorei Rothe in Schwerin, a café in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, gave its customers hats with pool noodles on them to help customers maintain a safe physical distance of 1,5 meters apart.
Jaqueline Rothe, the owner of the café, posted a photo on their Facebook page to show off the new headgear.
"This was the perfect method to keep customers apart and a fun one. It was a perfect gag and of course it was funny, our customers were really into it. But what it did show to us (was) how difficult it is to keep a distance of 1.5 meters," Rothe told local TV company that was filming the re-openings of cafés and restaurants.
Due to the new restrictions, the café now only has 12 tables instead of its usual 36. The café was able to stay open during Germany’s lockdown however it was not allowed to serve customers inside.
Rothe said: "We will see what to expect when Germany opens up further, more people are allowed to travel and we have more tourists coming in the next few weeks, we will take it as it comes.”
