CAPE TOWN -

As South Africa prepares for lockdown level 3 from June 1, fitness enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief as public exercise restrictions loosen up.

Currently, South Africans are only allowed to exercise in public between 6am to 9am within a 5km radius from home. However, during level 3, people will be allowed to exercise between 6am and 6pm.

“At this stage of level 3, the regulations place more responsibilities on individuals themselves and make sure that their family members also comply with health protocols,” said the

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola.

“It is not the responsibility of the police only to make sure that we are compliant. The police only come in when there is clear non-compliance with the public and the first intervention of the police is to urge you to comply.

“If people are not complying police will have to take action in terms of the Criminal procedure Act. But what we want to emphasise is that people take responsibility for their own health,” he said.

Lamola explained that the level 4 restriction on exercise was to help the South African Police Services (SAPS) and that South Africans need to continue to wear masks and not exercise in groups.
