DURBAN – A large quantity of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) supplied by the government to schools for learners ahead of the reopening of schools that had recently disappeared miraculously reappeared, on Thursday, June 4.
PPE's are a key requirement at all schools for learner and staff in order to reopen on Monday.
On Tuesday, June 2, the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department released a media statement, saying a large quantity of PPE had disappeared from the uMlazi, Pinetown and Zululand schooling districts. In the statement, the PPEs disappeared while on route to the circuit offices and schools.
Kwazi Mshengu, MEC for education in KwaZulu-Natal, had been at Insika High School when it was revealed that the school had only received one mask per child instead of two. Upon further inspection, it was revealed that 4000 of the 6000 schools in the province were fully prepared to reopen on June 8.
Kwazi Mthethwa spokesperson for Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu, confirmed, on Thursday, that the missing PPE had been recovered and someone would be held accountable which was reported to TimesLive.
“We hope that the investigation will reveal finer details of this matter. This is about accountability, openness, and transparency. There's no criminal case opened yet, any action that we take will be informed by the investigation that is underway,” said Mthethwa.
