CAPE TOWN -

While many South Africans celebrated on social media following the news by President Cyril Ramaphosa to lift the ban on the sale of alcohol, others who live in fear are saying ‘we don’t need alcohol on the Cape Flats.’

Bridgetown community leader and founder of the Nantes Athletics Club, Caroline Peters, voiced her opinion on Facebook and said there has been an increase in domestic violence during lockdown.

“We cannot have alcohol unbanned during lockdown Mr. President. We have seen domestic violence at its worst during lockdown,” said Peters.

“We are struggling to feed families and from June 1 we won’t be buying food, we’ll be buying alcohol because women who are in abusive relationships can’t stop their husbands from forcing them to buy alcohol,” she said.
