CAPE TOWN- Over 33 000 people have recovered from Covid-19 in South Africa, while 24 000 active cases are continuing to fight the contagious virus. A Covid-19 survivor from Cape Town says that maintaining a positive mindset helped him in his recovery from hospital.

Public Relations specialist and co-founder of

The Client Media, Shorn Khumalo, says "often your anxiety jumps up when you think of the coronavirus deaths that have occurred and the cases that are increasing, but having a positive mindset helped me. What also left me positive that I would recover was that I am young and don't have underlying health issues".

He noticed on May 24, that he was feeling unwell and immediately placed himself into self-isolation. Three days later he experienced a consistent cough, sore throat and fatigue, "that's when I started worrying that it could be more than just a change of season flu-ish fever," said Khumalo.

One of the symptoms Khumalo experienced was a gradual loss of appetite. "I couldn't eat solid foods, all I wanted to eat was oranges and pineapples".

Four days after noticing symptoms he contacted a client of his, Dr Mathobela Matjekane who owns CliniMed in Parklands. During their telephonic conversation, Matjekane pointed out that Khumalo was experiencing shortness of breath. "You can barely finish your sentence without stopping to catch your breath," she said.

Khumalo admitted himself into hospital the next day where he was tested for Covid-19 and his results came back positive. "The nasal test was very uncomfortable because they shove the swap really far back in your nose," he said.

"There are some myths I heard that certain hospitals are not treating people correctly. What I saw personally, I take my hat off to the medical professionals because they are working tirelessly," he said.

Khumalo feels he has made a 90 percent recovery and is currently at home with his family.
