CAPE TOWN -

Transport minister Fikile Mbalula outlined the new regulations for the taxi industry following consultations with health experts, allowing local taxis to now load to full capacity.

Mbalula added that inter-provincial travel is only allowed a loading capacity of 70%, while meter taxis, e-hailing, local busses and taxis are permitted to load 100% for any trip which is no longer than 200km.

“No person or passenger will be allowed to use any form of public transport or enter a building, place or premises if they do not wear a cloth face mask or a homemade item or another appropriate item that covers nose and mouth,” said Mbalula.

“Drivers and other employees must wear face masks or appropriate items that cover the nose and mouth, together with a face shield,” he said.

Mbalula explained that permits remain compulsory for long-distance travelers.
