CAPE TOWN -

While the retail industry reopens on June 1, restaurants, beauty salons and hairdressers remain closed with takeaway food available only by delivery orders.

All business sectors have felt the pinch of national lockdown due to the global Covid-19 outbreak and Wendy Alberts from the Restaurant Association of South Africa said the industry is suffering and most restaurants are running at a loss.

“The pressure at this point in time is getting critical for the industry and the repercussions and the operating through takeaways only has been dramatic on our finances,” she said in a radio interview.

“We are seeing that we are getting deeper and deeper into debt and that is not good for the industry.

“The elements of a restaurant needs to be compared to that of everything else. If you look at people going to stand in queues at a supermarket to get your meals,” she said.

She added that the restaurant industry is well prepared for Covid-19 and that the sector is known to have the highest health standard.
