DURBAN – The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic combined with the country's downgrade to Junk Status many South African businesses have suffered financial lows with some even closing their doors.

One of South Africa’s well-known independent media companies, Associated Media Publishing (AMP) announced it was closing its doors. The AMP is known for its popular magazine titles like Cosmopolitan and House and Leisure.

News of the company’s closure was announced in a media statement on Thursday, April 30, by chief executive Julia Raphaely. Raphaely's mother launched the publishing company in 1982. In the media statement, Julia said that AMP will close its doors from May 1.

"This is the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. We never thought this day would come, but we are left with no choice," said Raphaely.

Another well-known company in South Africa, Flight Centre also decided to shutdown 40 percent of its company in South Africa. The company, established in the mid 90s, had grown to become one of the largest booking companies in South Africa. The Cruiseabout brand will also be closing in South Africa, however, store customers and their bookings will be handled by a Flight Centre Travel Expert and team.

Cruiseabout is seeking to build its online presence through the Flight Centre's websites with an independent company known as Flight Centre Associates. It is unclear how many staff members stand to lose their jobs.

Managing director of Middle East Africa Flight Centre Travel Group Andrew Star said: “Customers can rest assured that their travel arrangements and bookings will be well catered for by the rest of the Flight Centre team nationally. If you are holding a booking or have credit due, you will receive a personal email or SMS with confirmation of this in the coming week.”
