This is how much a Covid-19 vaccine will cost

CAPE TOWN - According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are at least ten coronavirus vaccine programmes that have progressed to Phase III trials worldwide.

Several efforts are underway to help make that possible, including the U.S. government’s Operation Warp Speed.

Through the initiative, the U.S. government has pledged $10 billion and aims to develop and deliver 300 million doses of a safe, effective coronavirus vaccine by January 2021.

The World Health Organization is also coordinating global efforts to develop a vaccine, with an eye toward delivering two billion by the end of 2021.

As per data provided by London based think tank, Air Infinity the expected costs per two doses of vaccines will range from about $8 to $74 (R130 to nearly R2000).

AstraZeneca- With their vaccine named AZD1222 is likely to be the cheapest vaccine available, it is expected to be priced at R130 ($8) per two doses.

Gamaleya Research Institute- The Russian government research institute' vaccine named Sputnik V, will be priced at about R162 ($10) per two doses.

Johnson & Johnson- The vaccine named Ad26COVS1 is expected to be priced at about R325 ($20) per two doses. On Monday South African pharmaceutical company Aspen pharma announced signing a deal with the company for the multinational's Covid-19 vaccine.

Novavax- The vaccine named NVX-CoV2373 will cost just over R500 ($32) per two doses.

Pfizer- It is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and its vaccine mRNA-BNT162 is expected to be priced at over R600 ($39) per two doses.

Sinovac- The China based vaccine maker, with their vaccine named CoronaVac will be priced at about R 1000 ($60) per two doses.

Sinopharm (Wuhan)- The vaccine is being developed in Wuhan which is also said to be the source of the Covid-19 pandemic. The vaccine is expected to cost about R1 200 ($70) per two doses.

Sinopharm (Beijing)- The company is also developing another vaccine in Beijing, named BBIBP-CorV it will cost about R 1 200 per two doses, the same as the one being devoloped in Wuhan.

Moderna- It is an American biotechnology company, it is one of the frontrunners in the race for Covid-19 vaccine. Its vaccine named mRNA-1273 is estimated to meet requirements before end of the year. It is also one of the most expensive, it's expected to cost about R 2000 ($74) per two doses.
