DURBAN - Three pensioners aged 83, 85 and 98, living at Essenwood Residence in Durban left quarantine at the home on Monday morning after beating Coronavirus. Two of the women spent more than two weeks, and the third the mandatory 10 days in quarantine after testing positive for the virus.
Commenting on the news of three elderly women who survived the virus, Matron, Colleen Dempers, said they had been dreading cases at the home, and everyone had been very anxious after the first case, however, the women pulled through.
“South African grannies are strong! These women were tough and determined to get better and only needed TLC during their illness. Now that we have weathered this first storm, we feel a bit more confident,” she said.
Meanwhile, three more Covid-19 cases have come to light at The Association For The Aged (Tafta) facilities, bringing our total number of infections to date to eighteen. The new cases were recorded at the Tafta Langeler Towers residents.
According to Tafta CEO Femada Shamam, these elders were already in self-isolation due to the screening process the social work team had already initiated.
“We believe the risk of these residents infecting others are minimal. The residents remain in isolation and the staff are monitoring them for symptoms until their isolation ends. These recent cases bring the total number of our infections to date to eighteen with two of our first cases having fully recovered from the virus,”
“We continue to monitor those elders who are positive and work with the Department of Health (DOH) to screen and test those elders identified as high risk. If you have any queries regarding friends or family members residing at the impacted facilities, please contact the management team of the home,” she said.
