CAPE TOWN- Today marks 100 days since South Africa first went into lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.

President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement on 23 March that the nation would go into a

. Evidently, the lockdown has been extended since his initial announcement, however it has come with some relaxed regulations.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on 9 April that South Africa’s national lockdown would be extended by two weeks, beyond the initial 21 days.

5 levels of easing lockdown

President Cyril Ramaphosa outlined a phased relaxation of the lockdown restrictions and detailed a 5 level alert system with clearly defined levels.

Restaurants open for delivery only

Minister of Trade and Industry Ebrahim Patel announced on 25 April that restaurants and takeaways could open, but no sit-in will be allowed.

SA to enter

alert level 3 on 1 June

South Africa will entered into alert level 3 of the national lockdown on 1 June. President Cyril Ramaphosa said if the spread of infection was not contained and if health facilities become overwhelmed the country could move to alert level 4 or 5.

air travel opens up

After 10 weeks of the ban on commercial flights in South Africa due to the national lockdown from 1 June limited domestic air travel was opened for business purposes in alert level 3.
