CAPE TOWN - Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in China has reported a new cluster of infections.

According to Reuters, these are the first reported infections since a lockdown on the city was lifted a month ago.

Wuhan reported five new confirmed cases, all from the same residential compound. One was the wife of an 89-year-old patient reported a day earlier as the first confirmed case in the central city in more than a month.

"At present, the task of epidemic prevention and control in the city is still very heavy," the Wuhan health authority said in a statement.

"We must resolutely contain the risk of a rebound."

It was reported that all of the latest cases were previously classified as asymptomatic, people who test positive for the virus and are capable of infecting others but do not show clinical signs such as a fever.

Meanwhile in South Africa, IOL reports that Covid-19 killed seven people in a space of three days in Gauteng bringing to 22 the number of deaths while infections have now risen to 1952 in that province.

The Gauteng Department of Health released the latest statistics on Monday which revealed that while 15 people were declared dead from the virus on Thursday, the number increased rapidly in three days.

The Western Cape however remains South Africa's epicentre with the highest number of Covid-19 infections and related deaths. On Saturday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize visited the province to look at plans to curb the spread of the virus.
