285 arrested in Soweto

Johannesburg -

A total of 285 people were arrested around Soweto at the weekend, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

At least three people were arrested for rape, two for murders, 18 for assault and 20 for drunk driving, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

Other cases included shoplifting, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of and dealing in drugs, theft and fraud.

The arrests came after roadblocks, raids and stop-and-searches.

All would appear in courts around Roodepoort, Meadowlands, Kliptown, Protea, Lenasia and Vereeniging on Monday. - Sapa
