Johannesburg - A Pakistani couple accused of kidnapping a six-month-old baby boy in Bezuidenhout Valley appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Monday.

“It was postponed to January 21 for a bail application,” Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

They face charges of kidnapping and attempted murder.

Police arrested the couple on Thursday. They allegedly kidnapped the baby and tried to slit his nanny's throat on Tuesday. The couple had rented a room in the family's house.

Police said the father received a text message on Wednesday that the wanted R100,000 in exchange for the baby's safe return.

Police found the couple following a tip-off from the public. The nanny was recovering in hospital. The baby was unharmed.

The couple had three children of their own, and were apparently expecting a fourth. - Sapa
