Cape Town - A community in Khayelitsha has been left in shock after the naked body of a young woman was found in a communal toilet.

Residents of Town Two found the murder scene when a resident, who needed the loo, discovered the 20-year-old just after sunrise.

Sonoxola Mafevuka was found standing in an upright position over the toilet bowl, with her hands placed on the wall above her head.

The cause of death has yet to be confirmed, but residents believe she was dragged to the toilet on Tuesday night, where she was raped and killed, says community leader Colin Nomatiti.

The victim’s sister-in-law, Iminathi Mafevuka, 22, says Sonoxola left the house at 8pm.

“I don’t know where she went.

“She couldn’t have gone to her boyfriend as he was at work,” she says.

It was only the next morning that she discovered Sonoxola never returned home.

Unaware of her sister-in-law’s death, she went to the toilet, which is about 100 metres away.

“I saw people standing by the toilets, but I wasn’t taking much note, until I saw her clothes lying there and I saw her – she was dead,” says an emotional Iminathi.

She says Sonoxola was wearing navy blue tights and a tank top the last time she saw her.

Captain FC van Wyk has confirmed that a murder investigation has been opened.
