Johannesburg - The police are on the hunt for a vehicle-hijacking syndicate masquerading as Joburg metro police officers.

This is after another man was hijacked by the bogus cops on Wednesday. It was the second incident to have happened this week.

Metro police spokeswoman Superintendent Edna Mamonyane said a heavily armed gang hijacked a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi near Midrand on Wednesday.

The three men, she said, had been wearing metro police uniforms when they stopped the driver of the Quantum.

They then drove the taxi to Eldorado Park and dumped its driver in the suburb.

A man in the neighbourhood came to his assistance and phoned the police.

In an earlier incident on Monday, Mamonyane said, the police were stopped by a frantic motorist, saying he had been hijacked by men driving a grey VW Polo.

The man was travelling on the M1 between Marlboro and Grayston drives when he was pulled over by the bogus traffic officers.

“The man told the police that the hijackers were wearing Joburg metro police uniform when they stopped him,” she said.

The men took his car, a Mazda bakkie, and left him on the side of the road. He flagged down a metro police car.

The men sped off from the police and, during the chase that ensued, the thugs drove into Alexandra.

The man’s car had not been found.

“We are looking for suspects driving a Polo. It looks like we are dealing with a syndicate,” Mamonyane said.

She asked the public to assist the police with information.
