Johannesbrug - Community leaders of the Comet informal settlement near Boksburg were in a meeting with the police on Monday following protest action in the area, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

“The leaders were taken by police and we do not know what they are discussing,” said spokesman Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng.

He said about 1000 residents were still chanting and singing freedom songs in the streets after 9am.

Rondebult road between Main road and Leeupoort road was still closed to traffic.

“The intersection is blocked off with burning tyres, rubble, rocks and foreign objects,” he said.

Mokheseng urged motorists to avoid the road.

“We will know when the police and community leaders return or whether we should re-open the roads.”

The roads had been blocked since the early hours of Monday.

Mokheseng said the cause of the protest was not known.

No violence had been reported and no one had been arrested, he said. - Sapa
