Bloemfontein - The husband of the late cancer patient Magda Lombard has expressed his disappointment with the acquittal of a male nurse accused of raping her, the Volksblad reported on Thursday.

Dirk Lombard told the newspaper his wife would not have lied about the crime. He was not at the Bloemfontein High Court on Wednesday when judgement was delivered, due to work commitments.

Free State male nurse Michael Moema was acquitted on two charges of rape.

Judge Faan Hancke acquitted Moema, 33, who was accused of raping Lombard, who was terminally ill, at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein.

The judge held there was a reasonable possibility the patient had not been raped. Although Moema was not a model witness, his version that no rape had taken place could reasonably be true.

Magda Lombard died about a month after reporting the attack. Lombard told the newspaper he was glad his wife was not at court to hear the verdict.

“Where she now is, she rests,” the report quoted him saying.

He said whoever raped his wife would be punished one day.

“Above he will get his punishment,” he told the newspaper. - Sapa
