A seven-year-old boy may never walk properly again after being badly beaten by his Grade One classmates, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Times reported that six pupils of Qedizaba Primary School in Newcastle allegedly punched and kicked the boy, who cannot be named to protect his identity, in front of their classmates.

The teacher had asked the boy to record the names of children who made a noise while the teacher was out of the classroom. When the teacher punished them, the children turned on the boy.

The child's grandmother said doctors who examined the boy were concerned that his spine, liver and kidneys could have been damaged.

“I cry day and night after what happened to him. My grandson might never be able to walk properly again because of the assault.”

She said she had not reported the assault to police because teachers had convinced her to try to resolve the matter with the attackers' parents.

The school's principal said he was still gathering information for a report on the matter to be submitted to the education department.
