Brakpan, East Rand - A policeman accused of murder appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.
The case was postponed until next Wednesday when Constable Sivuyile Ndyeku, 28, was expected to bring a formal bail application, said Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini. He remained in custody.
Ndyeku allegedly shot dead Ekurhuleni metro police officer Popi Simphiwe Maseko, who was responding to an accident in Brakpan on Sunday morning.
Maseko and metro police decided to take Ndyeku, who was based at the Brakpan police station, to Pholosong Hospital for a blood test after the accident, suspecting him of driving under the influence of alcohol.
“It is alleged that upon their arrival at hospital the suspect... drew his own gun and started shooting at the EMPD officer (and) she was hit on the back of the head.”
He fled, but then handed himself to the police on Monday. - Sapa
