Bloemfontein - A police constable was arrested for murder in Bloemspruit, Bloemfontein, on Wednesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

“The arrest follows an investigation conducted by the Ipid into the disappearance of 23-year-old Vuyiswa Tau from Bloemspruit,” spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

“The deceased was last seen in the company of the suspect.”

Dlamini said it was alleged the constable fetched Tau from her home in a marked police car on January 26, and that it was not the first time he had fetched her.

According to information, he often stopped at the gate and hooted, at which Tau would go to him and they would drive away, Dlamini said.

“It is alleged that the suspect drove away with the deceased and never brought her home. When the family went to the police station, apparently the suspect denied having ever picked up the deceased,” he said.

“The victim was found dead under a bridge in Bloemspruit on January 28. The post mortem established that the cause of death is a gunshot wound.”

Dlamini said the investigation was continuing.

He said the 30-year-old constable would appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of murder. - Sapa
