Soweto -

A Soweto policeman was arrested by the Hawks on Friday for fraud, said police.

Captain Paul Ramaloko said the sergeant, 36, was stationed at the Protea Glen police station.

“Allegations are that the officer arrested three suspects for possession of suspected stolen goods on Monday,” said Ramaloko.

“On Tuesday, he took them to the Westonaria Magistrate's Court and the magistrate declined to prosecute them.

“They were supposed to be released but the officer kept them in custody and demanded they pay him R2500.”

The men raised R1500 and were released, but the policeman continued to pursue them for the other R1000.

“They alerted us about the incident and when he received the money, he was arrested,” said Ramaloko.

The policeman would appear in the Westonaria Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of corruption. - Sapa
