Johannesburg - A Mpumalanga policeman and his family were robbed in their house in Thekwane South, Kanyamazane, near Nelspruit, police said on Wednesday.

Three armed men accosted Sergeant John Modiba, 34, on Tuesday night when he went out to see if his car was locked, spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

They demanded his official firearm, ransacked the house, and threatened to shoot the family.

“They then tied Modiba with ropes and locked him in the bathroom, while his wife and two children were locked in the bedroom.”

The robbers took cellphones, a camera, and groceries and fled in Modiba's Volkswagen Jetta. They did not manage to get his gun.

The wife untied herself and the children and unlocked the bedroom.

The robbers were still at large. - Sapa
