Johannesburg - Two people were arrested in Soweto on Wednesday morning for the theft of car engines and parts, Gauteng police said.

A truck loaded with Toyota Quantum engines was found in the Ikwezi area of Soweto after thieves were interrupted by the arrival of the police, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

“We traced the goods to where they were offloaded and found them in Senaoane.”

No engines were found in the house but police recovered other goods in the truck, including engine oil and parts.

Makhubela said police were still searching for the “main suspect” who was believed to have escaped when police raided the house.

Police discovered the truck after receiving a report at 8.40am that it was parked near the railway station and that engines were being off-loaded onto a smaller truck.

When police arrived, the men moving the engines fled, he said.

Ten engines were found in the truck. An unknown number had already been moved.

Makhubela said the truck and engines were stolen from a factory in Rosettenville on Tuesday evening.
