Johannesburg - Acting on instinct, Joburg metro police officers on Tuesday stopped a minibus and found an arsenal of weapons inside.

JMPD spokesman chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the officers noted three male occupants of a Quantum acting suspiciously on the N3 near the Modderfontein turn-off.

They stopped the vehicle and after a search, found an LM6 automatic weapon.

One suspect was arrested but the other two men fled into the veld around the Modderfontein-Edenvale region.

The officers called for back-up and the dog unit arrived.

After an extensive search of the area, a second suspect was found lying in the grass with an R5 rifle.

The other suspect is still at large.

A 9mm gun, stolen during a robbery in Florida in 2008, and rounds of ammunition were recovered.

“The officers acted on a gut feel and we commend them for that. It was a potentially dangerous situation.

“The dogs are trained to sniff out arms and it was through them that we found the second man with the firearm.

“We believe this will lead to further arrests,” said Minnaar.
