Nelspruit - Two police officers accused of rape in White River and Ermelo have resigned, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.
A 47-year-old warrant officer from White River resigned on Tuesday, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said.
He was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 66-year-old woman after she had gone to the White River police station to report a crime.
He appeared in the White River Magistrate's Court on Monday and was granted R1 000 bail. He was expected back in court on August 27.
A 52-year-old warrant officer from Ermelo, who allegedly raped and impregnated a 17-year-old mentally disabled teenager, resigned on July 3, Mohlala said.
The teenager's mother took the girl to a clinic last month after suspecting she was pregnant. After her pregnancy was confirmed, the girl pointed out the warrant officer as the person responsible.
The mother laid a charge at the Ermelo police station and the officer was arrested. He appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate's Court on June 25 and was granted R1 000 bail, Mohlala said.
He was expected to appear in court again on Thursday.
Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thulani Ntobela welcomed their resignations.
“A mentally ill teenager and a 66-year-old pensioner having been raped by two experienced police officials. These allegations are disgusting. We do not need such members within our midst,” Ntobela said.
