Cops shoot dead Roodepoort robber

Johannesburg - One man was shot dead and two others arrested in Alexandra, Johannesburg, after they allegedly robbed a house in Helderkruin, Roodepoort on Saturday, Gauteng police

When the three men robbed the house in Helderkruin, they stole a car equipped with a tracker, said Captain Doniah Mothutsane.

Police tracked the robbers to London Road in Alexandra. Upon seeing police, the men fled in the stolen car.

The men, aged between 30 and 32, then abandoned it on the corner of London and Lenin roads, and fled on foot towards East Park with police giving chase. Other police saw the men and joined the chase.

One of the men hid in a house, with community members telling police where the man was. When the man saw police, a shoot-out ensued, with the man fatally wounded.

Shortly afterwards, the two other men were arrested.

“Two laptops, a tablet, a Blackberry phone, a Sony camera, a Russell Hobbs coffee maker, cutlery, handbag with items inside, a flat screen TV were found in an abandoned car,” said Mothutsane.

“A 9mm pistol and a toy gun were also recovered... An inquest docket has been opened and it will be handed to Ipid (Independent Police Investigative Directorate).”

The two men were expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court soon and would face charges of attempted murder, house robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
