Mmabatho - A man suspected of a string of crimes, including rape and robbery, was shot and wounded as he tried to evade arrest in Mmabatho on Friday, North West police said.

Police were chasing the man because they believed he was involved in a house robbery at Mmabato Unit 15 early on Friday morning, Colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

The man allegedly forced his way into the house, overpowered the man living there, and handcuffed him, before raping the man's wife.

The couple's cellphones, a laptop computer, a plasma television, an undisclosed amount of cash, and a car were stolen.

The car was traced using a tracking device and police lay in wait for it.

When the suspected robber saw the police cars he apparently panicked and veered into oncoming traffic, smashing into another car.

“The suspect came out of the car and allegedly shot at the police who returned fire and shot him in the leg,” Setlhako said.

The man fell to the ground and was arrested, while a second man fled on foot.

A police pistol, reported stolen last month, was also recovered.

The wounded man remained under police guard in hospital, while the second man was still at large.
