Johannesburg - Three prisoners were shot and wounded when they tried to escape from custody at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on the East Rand on Thursday, police said.

Four prisoners jumped out of a police vehicle as they were being dropped off at the door to the court cells around 10am, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

“Three of them were shot and wounded in the legs while the fourth one managed to escape.”

Police were searching for him. The injured prisoners were taken to Natalspruit hospital in Katlehong.
