Harrismith, Free State - A Free State policeman who shot at fellow officers when they tried to arrest him at an accident scene appeared in the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Captain Mmako Mophiring said police officers tried to arrest Constable Mduduzi Ndlovu, 30, at an accident scene on the N3, just outside Harrismith on the way to Van Reenen, on Friday.

The accident, involving a minibus taxi, was allegedly caused by the policeman, while in full uniform and under the influence of liquor. Ndlovu was off duty at the time.

He allegedly fired on traffic officials when they tried to arrest him, then allegedly shot at Harrismith police when they were called to help. They returned fire and he surrendered.

The case was postponed to October 10 for further investigation. Ndlovu is charged with attempted murder and driving under the influence of alcohol. - Sapa
