Cops are hunting six brazen robbers who forced a cash in transit van off a city highway, before robbing it and fleeing with a large amount of money.
Police sources say the cash in transit van was found in a ditch along the N2, close to Mew Way, in the direction of Cape Town just before 9pm on Monday.
A second vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla, which had been used by the robbers, was left at the scene and stood alongside the van with its doors open.
Police say this car was reported stolen in Delft.
Two cash in transit guards who were held up at gunpoint were lucky to escape unharmed.
The G4S van’s back door was also open with cash boxes strewn on the grass.
It’s believed the robbers followed the van and fired several shots at it, forcing it off the road.
They then ransacked the van, stealing an undisclosed amount of money.
The men then fled the scene in a Mercedes-Benz with an unknown number plate.
Police have yet to confirm where the van came from, or where it was destined for.
The Daily Voice has learnt that the guards’ firearms were also stolen, but could not confirm this with police.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirms the group of six robbers are still at large.
“It is alleged a cash in transit truck was travelling on the N2 direction Cape Town when it was attacked close to Mew Way. Six suspects fired shots at it and it was forced off the road, Van Wyk says.
“The driver and a passenger were inside the truck. The six males robbed them and took boxes containing an undisclosed amount of money and also their firearms.
“A Toyota Corolla, which was positively robbed in Delft was used by the suspects and left on the scene.
“The suspects fled in a Mercedes Benz registration unknown.
“No injuries were sustained. No arrest as yet.”
