Pretoria - A police detective was shot dead while arresting two suspected fraudsters in Sinoville, Pretoria, on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

The police officer's name could not immediately be revealed because not all his next-of-kin had been informed, Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

Around 10am, the policeman went to arrest a 64-year-old man for fraud.

When the man saw the police he tried to escape through another door of the building.

When the policeman caught him, the man drew a firearm and shot the policeman dead.

The 64-year-old fled the scene and a chase ensued.

On Moloto Road the man stopped his car, then shot and wounded himself. He was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.

The man's wife was also arrested for fraud.

The couple would appear in court soon. The man would face charges of murder, attempted murder, and fraud.
