The body of 21-year-old woman was exhumed from a shallow grave in the garden of a house in Newtown, KwaDukuza (Stanger), on Sunday after a domestic worker had gone to the Durban central police to confess to the murder.

Police have not yet released the identity of the woman.

Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge could only confirm that a 21-year-old man had handed himself to police.

A murder docket had been opened and the suspect was being held in custody.

Police said they believed the woman had been strangled with a rope.

Head of the detective unit in KwaDukuza, Lieutenant-Colonel Vikinduku Mbhele, said: “The woman’s body was found in a shallow grave and it seems that she had been killed before being buried.”

Attempts to speak to the woman’s family were unsuccessful as police requested that they be given a chance to come to terms with the tragedy.

“The family is still traumatised,” said a police officer.

Community members gathered in shock outside the house as police exhumed the body.

A family friend, Das Harilal, said that residents were desperate to know why the woman had been killed.

“There are lots of questions that need answers. Everyone here is shocked,” Harilal said. - The Mercury
