Eastern Cape - A 68-year-old woman was raped in her home at Mfakathini in the Eastern Cape, police said on Tuesday.

Major Zamukulungisa Jozana said the woman was raped on Monday night.

He said a man kicked open the door and raped the woman, who was sleeping alone in her room.

The man demanded money and fled the scene when he could not find any.

The woman's grandson heard her crying and called neighbours, who chased and caught a 32-year-old man.

The man was handed over to the police and was charged with rape.

He was expected to appear in the Mqanduli Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Police said another elderly woman had been raped at Gawu in Mqanduli.

Jozana said the 73-year-old woman was raped on Sunday night.

"The victim was sleeping alone in her room when she noticed that there was an unknown man sitting on her bed."

The man raped the woman several times before fleeing, Jozana said.
