Kempton Park - A former police detective has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for fraud, theft, forgery and uttering by the Kempton Park Regional Court, the Hawks said on Thursday.
Evert Grobler, 45, was sentenced on Wednesday. He worked as a detective for several years before resigning in 2009, Captain Paul Ramaloko said in a statement.
“He was found guilty of stealing an amount of R20 200, which he was supposed to deliver to the SA Reserve Bank in Pretoria, and falsifying acknowledged receipt of the cash,” Ramaloko said.
“The money was kept at a police safe-keeping facility when police members of the Ivory Park Police Station seized it from a suspect and forfeited it to the state.”
Hawks head Lt-Gen Anwar Dramat welcomed the sentence.
“We warn our members to avoid temptations when they come across cash in the process of their duties,” he said.
“We expect our law enforcement officers to live up to the employment ethics. We have been entrusted with enormous responsibilities and we therefore have to exercise our powers with responsibility.”
