Cape Town - Former Western Cape community policing forum chairman Hanif Loonat was arrested for alleged intimidation on Tuesday.

The arrest was reported to the Cape Argus by Faisal Abrams, head of the forum in Bishop Lavis and a friend of Loonat.

Police spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, although declined to confirm the name.

“This office can confirm the arrest of a 55-year-old man on charges relating to intimidation. The person is expected to make a court appearance at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court (on Thursday).”

Last July, Loonat was suspended by provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Arno Lamoer for “alleged misconduct” relating to statements made to the media. His suspension was later lifted after he was voted off the board in absentia.

At the time, Loonat claimed senior police officers had conspired to engineer his ousting.

Abrams, who tried to visit Loonat at Rondebosch police station on Wednesday, said: “The situation is very blurred at the moment in terms of why he was arrested. I am worried and concerned, he is a friend and also like a brother.”
