Durban - The body of the missing Durban policeman found in a shallow grave was identified by his family on Wednesday.

Durban Central Police Constable Nkanyiso Dennis Ngcobo, 32, was found buried in a shallow grave near eMkhomazi. His wallet and cellphone were also found.

He was last seen on August 2 when he went to a party with two police friends. He was reported missing at Berea Police Station.

A case of murder has been opened at eMkhomazi SAPS. Police had not confirmed if the body had been identified.

When the Daily News contacted his mother, Nokuthula Ngcobo, she said she was in shock and not ready to talk.

A source said the family had been to the mortuary on Wednesday morning.

Police have not arrested anyone yet.

A vehicle-tracking signal drew police to an area where sniffer dogs led them to a shallow grave on Tuesday.

Police drove to where a vehicle, in which the policeman had last been seen alive, had been parked for three hours. They sent their dog into the bushes and it picked up a scent.
